New Event Venue in Bellefontaine, Ohio!

Bellefontaine, Ohio, is a city where history and progress intertwine, and a recent transformation beautifully illustrates this. A historic church, once a place of worship, is being reborn to host memorable experiences for all who enter …

… Perhaps even you!

The Maxwell in Bellefontaine, Ohio Has Everyone Ready

The Grace A.M.E. Church in downtown Bellefontaine, located at 233 South Main Street, is being converted into The Maxwell, a stunning new wedding and events venue. This venture is a partnership between Small Nation and Brittany Saxton, owner of Bellefontaine’s popular restaurant, Six Hundred Downtown.

The name The Maxwell pays homage to Rev. W.T. Maxwell, the pastor who oversaw the church’s original construction in 1890. Designed to be a premier event space, The Maxwell will be capable of hosting a wide array of gatherings, from elegant weddings to corporate events and social celebrations.

And guess what? It’s within walking distance of lodging. Check out the Cobblestone Hotel & Suites, which offers modern amenities and is just a short stroll away. Another convenient choice is the Flats at Rainbow Row, providing quality short-term rentals right in the downtown near The Maxwell!

But before we look ahead, let’s wind back the clocks.

History of the Church

The Grace A.M.E. Church was founded way back in 1865, right after the Civil War ended and slavery was abolished. This was obviously a very important time for African Americans, and the A.M.E. church denomination itself played a huge role in fighting slavery and even helping people escape through the Underground Railroad.

Anyone standing in the building is surrounded by history.

Impactful, emotional, life-changing history.

Folks from the congregation, including women who raised money by doing things like laundry, and other community members all chipped in with their time and effort to build it.

Preserving Bellefontaine’s Heritage on Main St.

Even though this church is undergoing a transformation, the project respects the building’s past. Jason Duff, Founder and CEO of Small Nation, has a clear vision for the new venue. He wants to honor what came before and embrace the future. How so?

The Maxwell will combine the church’s historic look with modern amenities.

Planned work includes a new patio, along with a seasonal tent conveniently located behind the building. This tent will be ideal for accommodating larger events in Bellefontaine during the warmer months. The space is being meticulously designed to create a stunning backdrop for unforgettable experiences, mixing historical charm with contemporary comforts.

Cally Lange of Revival Design Collective will be the lead architect for The Maxwell, and this is a good choice because Lange’s firm is known for historic preservation.

On the construction side, Level MB Construction is responsible for the meticulous build, turning all those designs into reality. Small Nation served as the development partner, guiding the project from concept to completion.

And finally, Quest Federal Credit Union provided the essential financing that made the entire endeavor possible.
